The eye of the storm. 1 video (25 min.). This documentary explores the nature of prejudice in a dramatic third grade classroom experiment conducted in a small Midwestern town, a town without ghettos, blacks, or campus unrest. It demonstrates how quickly wholesome, friendly schoolchildren can be infected with the ugly virus of discrimination. Host and narrator is Bill Buetel of ABC News. Imitation of life. 1 video (111 min.). The lives of a widow and her housekeeper are united first in mutual need, then success and ultimately, in heartache in this Academy Award nominated film. Louise Beavers plays Delilah, a black woman whose light-skinned teenager rejects her mother and her race. (MOVIES PN 1993.2 .I527 1934A VTAPE)            

Journey to justice. 1 video (48 min.). The program pays tribute to a group of Canadians who took racism to court in the fight for Black civil rights.  The film documents the struggle of six people between the 1930s to the 1950s who refused to accept inequality: Viola Desmond, Fred Christie, Hugh Burnette, Bromley Armstrong, Donald Willard Moore and Stanley G. The real life struggle of South Africa's courageous human rights activist, Nelson Mandela, is movingly told in this powerful, critically-acclaimed film.  The film traces his life from his co-founding of the National African Congress which organized South African blacks against apartheid, to his trial for treason and lengthy imprisonment. Remember Africville. 1 video (35 min.). Africville, a small black settlement, lay within the city limits of Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 1960s. The families who lived there were uprooted and their homes demolished in the name of urban renewal and integration. Now, more than 20 years later, former residents, their descendants and some of the decision-makers speak out and with the help of archival photographs and films tell the story of that painful relocation. Saul Alinsky went to war. 1 video (58 min.). Saul Alinsky, controversial professional organizer, goes to war against the conditions that keep the poor in poverty. Speakers for the dead. 1 video (48 min.). The program reveals the turmoil stirred up by desecrated graves and underlines the hidden history of Blacks in Canada.  In 1930s rural Ontario, farmer Bill Reid buried the tombstones of a Black cemetery under a pile of broken rocks to make way for a potato patch.  In the 1980s, descendants of the original settlers, Black and White, came together to restore the Priceville cemetery--but there were hidden truths no one wanted to discuss. Understanding race. 1 video (52 min.).  Race: no gene has substantiated it and no scientist has quantified it, yet it continues to polarize the worldÕs populations like no other concept. The program examines the history and power of the artificial distinction called ÒraceÓ viewing it within historical, scientific and cultural contexts. (HT 1521 .U52 1999 VTAPE)
